Abstract
Hyponatremia is a frequent electrolyte disorder among older adult patients, this population in particular has an intrinsic predisposition linked to physiological changes related to aging or that is associated with concomitant diseases and the medication that the patient receives, it is also a prognostic factor for its hospitalization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out that allowed us to identify the prevalence and factors associated with hyponatremia. For this, the medical records of patients who were treated at the Alcívar Hospital were reviewed, starting from a universe of 500 medical records from January 2016 to December 2018, obtaining a total of 74 patients who met the inclusion criteria for the study.
RESULTS: We worked with 74 older adults, of whom 55.51% belonged to the female gender, as a pathological history, 66.22% of the total number of patients suffered from arterial hypertension, but at the same time 2 or more concomitant pathologies were documented, Gastroenteritis 43.24% was the most common diagnosis at admission that could be related to their hyponatremia, the most common type of hyponatremia was mild with 52.7% and the mortality rate of these patients was 5.41 %.
CONCLUSIONS: There are few studies in Ecuador about hyponatremia in the elderly, but it is vitally important to recognize, diagnose and treat it on time, to avoid fatal outcomes, in addition to preventing it, since one of the causes in our study was gastroenteritis. , among other pathologies.
