Nutritional management of surgical cancer patients complicated by radical cancer surgery (HIPEC): presentation of a clinical case
Main Article Content
Abstract
One of the main complications in the surgical oncologic patient is malnutrition; for this reason, we will discuss the case of a 66-year-old female patient in critical condition with radical oncologic surgery HIPEC. Nutritional status influences the tolerance of such treatment, making it one of the significant fields of innovation and development in medicine. Moreover, it must be treated in a particular way since patients with this type of disease must receive interdisciplinary oncological care.
The adequate management of nutritional support plays a fundamental role in surgical oncology patients since malnutrition decreases the patient’s quality of life, increases the risk of infections, decreases their strength and muscle mass, and increases the prevalence of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, early nutritional intervention can improve the prognosis of patients and reduce the rate of complications of this disease.
Participation between the oncologist and the clinical nutrition specialist is necessary. For this reason, suitable nutritional support will allow a successful, complete oncological treatment, as nutrition today provides substances to rectify the response of neoplasms with mechanisms of action different from the current cytostatics shown in the case.
