Abstract
BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a prevalent complication in patients who have suffered from a stroke. It is related to high mortality, extended hospital stay, and poor functional outcomes that affect the patient’s quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: To recognize the risk factors associated with Stroke-associated pneumonia in patients with acute ischemic stroke and its relationship with mortality at the Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Hospital from May 2018 to May 2021.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective, longitudinal, correlational study with an analytical and quantitative approach was conducted at the Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Hospital (HTMC) from May 2018 to May 2021.
RESULTS: The study comprised 442 patients: 277 males and 165 females. The mean age of the population was 70,5 years.
CONCLUSIONS: SAP has a high prevalence and mortality among patients. It is associated with multiple risk factors and poor outcomes.
